INDUCTION WEEK

On the first week, the course was all told to bring in their favourite pair of shoes for a workshop that will be held. A photographer came in to help along side a studio shoot to teach us some different techniques to increase our knowledge on Studio Photography. As we worked as a team, we looked at the shows we all brought in and decided to use mine and Liv Motley’s. This is due to us both bringing brightly coloured trainers, therefore be more interesting to shoot for us as we thought playing with colour will be interesting. Firstly, we combined the both 2 pairs on the floor into a bundle to create a collage of trainers. Paul (the photographer) suggested to use spot lighting to create a spot light on the shoes as this creates a more dramatic feel as it brings more contrast.

This then gave me the idea to dangle the shoes by the laces to create a loose, dangling effect. Using the same lighting idea with a spotlight but this time behind the trainers, this caused the trainers to turn into a silhouette and for the background to become lit. I liked how these turned out as I feel these kind of images would be good for brands such as Nike to use before they release a new trainer, to keep the customer on edge. Using different colour gels also, help to give more interest and relation to the trainers also as the colour could link to the colour of the trainer.

During the shoot, we wanted to show the sole of shoe also when it was dangling. The only way we could do this was to hold the shoe with our hand, meaning the hand is in the shot. I decided to edit this out afterwards using the patch tool and then colour correcting. See below the difference

I then wanted to take the shoot further by playing around on photoshop by duplicating the layers. This was just to see the possible ways that the photo’s could be taken further. With one i deleted strips from the top layer so you could see parts of the image underneath. The other i changed the opacity and flipped the photo so it looks like a mirror image. Overall, I learnt that it is important to think about what lighting you want for a shoot as there are a wide range of techniques you can use and they're all useful for different effects. Working as a team, as always with my group was really good as we like to bounce ideas off each other to create an outcome that we are all happy with.
